Your Loved One’s Safety Is Our First Priority
As you consider the care needs of your family member, please take a moment to reduce their risk of fall and injury:
- Ensure that their vision and hearing is checked regularly
- Talk to their doctor or pharmacist about their medications and possible side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness or becoming unsteady
- Ask a physical therapist or physician to create an exercise plan to strengthen muscles and improve balance
- Install safety bars around toilets and in the shower; connect a handheld showerhead and place a seat in the shower
- Place a safety mat or non-slip strips on stairs
- If your loved one is living alone install an emergency response system
- Ensure good and easily-turned-on lighting in the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, including nightlights in the bathroom and hallways
- Keep walkways clutter free and repair broken tiles or flooring to avoid tripping
- Avoid throw rugs or tack them down with non slip backing or glue
- Purchase a strap or case to help them carry a cell phone on their person
