Better Safe than Sorry – Create a Disaster Plan – NOW

Boca Home Care Services offers helpful tips on what to do before a possible disaster. Here in Florida we are particularly sensitive to Hurricane emergencies and may be better prepared than most. Still, it is important to review and update your plan as needed.
We may be to old to be a Scout now but it is never too late to be as prepared as possible in order to best be ready for the aftermath of a disaster. Please make note of a few tips to help you be best prepared.
Do you and your spouse have a Hurricane or Disaster Plan? I.E. Do you know what you’d do if you HAD to leave your home?
Do you or your spouse have medical needs which require electricity? Medications to be refrigerated? Be prepared to have back up supply and electrical source for at least a week.
If you have nowhere else to go and have specific medical needs, are you registered with your local Special Needs Shelter? Now is the time to DO SO.
How will you get to the shelter?
If your home sustains serious damage and is uninhabitable, what will you do? Where will you go?
If one of you has a Dementia and may wonder also, do you where an emergency ID bracelet or electronic locator?
Do you have an UP to DATE list of your medications, your spouse’s and at least a 10 day supply?
Do you have an Up to Date list of your Primary Physician, Specialists? With phone numbers?
Do you have an Up to Date list of your medical conditions including any Allergies?
Do you have copies of your Medical Directives, Power of Attorney, Living Will and so forth?
Do you have copies of your Driver’s License, Social Security, Medicare, Insurance cards?
Do you have a current picture of your spouse in event of Dementia/Alzheimer’s wandering?
Do you have a list of at least 3 emergency contacts – family members, relationship, name, phone number?
Do you have an adequate supply of underclothes, outer clothes, toiletries, food, water, Depends?
Do you have a few things to occupy time with? A puzzle, cards, music, favorite knick knack or anything you can carry with you to help redirect attention and provide some comfort to a spouse with Dementia?
Are all of your papers listed about in a waterproof packet, or Ziploc bags??
Please don’t wait before getting your “Survival Kit” Up to Date. The last thing you need in an emergency is to start scrambling. Have a small suitcase prepacked. Have Copies of important papers and lists, Prepacked.
